Climate Change Summit: Winter Edition (Part 1) – The State of Climate Change on Nantucket
A webinar in the winter run of the Nantucket Climate Change Summit, the series the Foundation and the Linda Loring Nature Foundation began the previous September. Dr. Jen Karberg and Dr. Sarah Bois give a presentation they had delivered in several versions before, recorded here so it could be kept. They begin with the global picture, using ice and soil cores to show the pattern in atmospheric carbon, and a temperature map on which New England stands out as warming faster than most of the world. The local material follows: what warming water means for the island’s shellfisheries, commercially and as a community fishery; flood maps for higher tides and heavier rainfall; erosion around the coast; species arriving from further south, usually carried in landscaping material, which have not yet caused serious trouble here; and phenology, meaning the timing of leaf-out, flowering, fruiting and caterpillar hatch. They close on the organizations working together under the island’s biodiversity initiative, and take questions.
